Analysis of narrative theory- Wheatus- teenage dirtbag

The narrative of this music video is based upon a boy who is considered to be a "loser" by his peers. He likes a girl who socialises with a person who bully's him and so he doesn't think she would notice him. However, at the end she asks him to dance.

 Propps theory
This music video supports this theory, because it involves a hero (the boy), a princess (the girl) and a villain (the bully) in the narrative.

Levi Strauss
This music video supports this theory with it's use of binary oppositions, such as good and bad and love and hate. The "good" is the boy and the girl and the "bad" is the people who bully the boy. Love is shown between the girl and the boy and hate is presented by the bully. The audience is aware that they should side with the boy and the girl.

Barthes
This music video engages the attention of the audience through the use of a cultural code. The audience understand the story line through their knowledge of the way the world works and they are aware that bullying is bad and love is good.

Todorov
This music video follows the 5 stages that Todorov states there are in media texts.
The original equilibrium is where the boy is admiring the girl and living his every day life, the disruption is where the bullying begins and recognition is shown when the girl falls out with her friends for bullying him. The attempt to restore is where the boy goes to the prom and the new equilibrium is where he is dancing with the girl.

The music video supports narrative theory, which shows that these theories are valid to some music videos.
