Print research- front covers

Looking at front covers of other Indie bands has helped me identify typical characteristics of a front cover. The name of the band seems to always be in a unique font that suits the band and creates a brand identity. I will apply this to my digipak by using dafont.com to find a font to suit my band. I have also noticed how the image seems to be the main focus of the front cover. They are usually images of the band in some shape or form. In many Indie band front covers they have merged the band members together. I like this idea and plan to experiment with pictures of my band members to apply this feature to my digipak front cover. The colour schemes are usually a theme of bright colours or simple grey or black and white colours, depending on the emotion of the band. My band are a very unemotional band and so I intend on using a colour scheme of perhap two or three bright colours.

Print research- Digipak analysis

The front cover is very simple. The image is a very redundant image for an Indie front cover, because it features the band itself. Their serious expressions connotes a sense of seriousness in their music. This is something I don't want to do for my Digipack, because my band is more comical than serious. The colours used are plain, which is a redundant element for Indie music bands. The band name is positioned in the top, right corner and is small. It is entropic for the name to be so small, but it allows the audience to focus on the image. The font used is unique to the band, which gives brand identity. This is common for most bands.
The inside uses the same colours as on the front cover. This is a redundant element as it creates a sense of brand identity to the colours used. On the left is a long shot, low angle of the band. This is a simple image, that doesn't appear eye catching, which is an entropic feature. On the right side is a long shot, high angle of the band. The focus on the band is redundant for CD's.
On the back the entire focus is on the image and the songs are listed in very small text. This is an entropic element, because the songs are usually the main focus on the back of CD's. The image of the merging faces creates more of a brand identity and interest in the band. The same colours are used yet again as this is a redundant element for all CD's and Digipaks. Their website and signed name is positioned on the right. This is common in all genres of music as it encourages people to look on their website.

The front cover has focused on the image of the band in a shop window. This is redundant for Indie bands as they usually include the band on the front cover and they are usually creating a sense of brand identity with their actions. The colours are simple, which also seems to be a redundant factor. The name of the band and song are positioned at the bottom in a simple font. This front cover isn't eye catching, so doesn't seem to be attracting a new audience.
Again, the colours are very simple and the image has the same location as on the front cover. The band is included again and they are now in the windows of the building.
The back has focused on the songs, but again has not included any eye catching qualities. This is an entropic element, however, Indie bands usually feature less bold elements compared to pop and rock bands.

Red hot chili peppers
The front cover of this digipak is very simple and only includes an image of a fly on a pill. This is an odd image and so the focus on it may create a sense of brand identity. The red hot chili peppers are a popular band and so people can clearly identify the band from this image. However, less popular bands cannot risk this and ensures they create brand identity through the font of the band name etc. Digipaks are usually used instead of simple plastic CD's when the album is a special edition album.
The inside also follows the simple plain colour white and only includes the name of the album and band. The font is simple and so there are no distraction of what the name of the album or band is which in itself may create a brand identity and focus the audiences attention on this information. The back also is white and shows little information. The songs, barcode and a paragraph of information is shown. Again the main focus is on the information shown. This is not typical of indie bands but perhaps digipak editions may have a sense of differentiation and may want to focus on certain things like the image to make the album memorable.
